Peut-être recevez-vous quantité de mails chaque jour. Mais avec ce mail-ci particulièrement, je souhaite attirer votre attention sur quelque chose d’essentiel à mes yeux. En soins psychiatriques palliatifs depuis de nombreuses années ma fille Edith qui demandait à être euthanasiée s’est suicidée au sein de l’institution psychiatrique où elle résidait.
C’est avec un grand succès, qu’au printemps 2015, la psychiatre Lieve Thienpont a publié en néerlandais le livre "Libera me", qui, en donnant la parole aux patients, attire avec une grande sensibilité l’attention sur la question de l'euthanasie en cas de souffrances psychiques.
Les témoignages repris dans ce livre sont d’une valeur inestimable. Bien mieux que quelque considération théorique que ce soit, ils aident le lecteur à se sentir impliqué dans la réalité, tellement difficile à comprendre, des personnes en souffrances psychiques insupportables et sans espoir. Il est de la plus haute importance pour Lieve Thienpont que les patients quittent le cabinet du médecin avec une nouvelle lueur d'espoir, peut-être pas (encore) pour une vie meilleure, mais en tout cas pour une mort digne ...
La Belgique et les Pays-Bas sont pratiquement les seuls pays au monde où, des personnes confrontées à des demandes personnelles fondamentales pour une fin de vie digne en cas de souffrances psychiques, disposent de la possibilité d’être aidées par euthanasie. C’est afin qu’à l'avenir, en dehors de notre pays également, des personnes en profondes souffrances psychiques soient de mieux en mieux accompagnées dans leurs demandes de fin de vie digne, que nous souhaitons traduire en français et en anglais le livre de Lieve Thienpont. En vue de publier ces deux versions début 2016.
Cependant, les coûts de traduction ne sont pas négligeables : 10.000€ pour les traductions en anglais et en français.

Parler de l’euthanasie n’est pas dangereux. Par contre, ne pas en parler l’est! Chacun à notre niveau nous pouvons jouer un rôle essentiel dans ce choix ultime.

Elke dag ontvangt u massa’s mails, maar met deze e-mail in het bijzonder wil ik uw aandacht vestigen op iets wat essentieel is in mijn ogen. Mijn dochter Edith, die al jaren in palliatieve psychiatrische behandeling was en om euthanasie vroeg, pleegde zelfmoord in de psychiatrische instelling waar ze verbleef.
Het was voor mij dan ook hartverwarmend dat psychiater Lieve Thienpont in het voorjaar van 2015 het boek "Libera me” publiceerde. Door het geven van een stem aan patiënten als Edith vestigt ze, met een hoge gevoeligheid, de aandacht op het probleem van euthanasie in geval van geestelijk lijden.
Van onschatbare waarde zijn de getuigenissen in het boek van dr. Thienpont. Veel beter dan elke theoretische beschouwing helpen zij de lezer betrokken te raken op de moeilijk te begrijpen realiteit van mensen die ondraaglijk en perspectiefloos psychisch lijden. Het is voor Lieve Thienpont van het grootste belang dat de patiënten de spreekkamer verlaten met een nieuwe sprankel hoop, zij het (nog) niet op een beter leven, dan toch op een menswaardige dood...
België en Nederland zijn vrijwel de enige landen in de wereld waar mensen, die geconfronteerd worden met geestelijk lijden, een fundamenteel persoonlijk verzoek kunnen instellen naar een passend levenseinde, en de mogelijkheid hebben om te worden geholpen door euthanasie. Omdat we ernaar streven om in de toekomst, ook buiten België, het onderwerp bespreekbaar te maken, willen we het boek van Lieve Thienpont graag laten vertalen naar het Frans en het Engels en die beide taalversies begin 2016 publiceren.
Om dat te realiseren, hebben we een crowdfunding-actie opgezet. Op dit moment hebben we al 1.946 euro opgehaald en beschikken over beloftes voor een bedrag van 5.000 euro, om de vertalingen mogelijk te maken, dus 6.946 euro op ons streefdoel van 10.000 euro. Met dat bedrag kunnen twee professionele vertalers (native speakers) aan de slag. Begin 2016 willen we dan wereldwijd het Engelse en het Franse e-book lanceren.

You undoubtedly receive tons of e-mails every day. With this particular one, however, I wish to draw your attention to something which, in my view, is truly essential. A number of years ago, my daughter Edith, in palliative psychiatric treatment since years, committed suicide, driven to this act by her unheard cry for help.
It was to great acclaim that psychiatrist Lieve Thienpont earlier this year published the Dutch-language book "Libera Me". By lending an ear to her patients, the book sensitively raised the issue of euthanasia in cases of intense mental suffering.
Belgium and The Netherlands are among the very few countries in the world where people who are confronted with fundamental questions about a dignified end of life in the case of intense mental suffering, can be helped through euthanasia. In order to allow people abroad who suffer mentally to get the same level of support in their quest for a dignified end of life, we are strongly committed to translating Lieve Thienpont's book into English and French. Both editions are planned to be published in early 2016. The costs related to these translations, however, are considerable. We therefore ask for your help to make this possible.
To achieve this, we launched a crowdfunding campaign. At present, we have already raised 1,946 euros and commitments for 5,000 euros, to make the translations possible, so already 6,946 euros on our goal of 10,000 euros. With this amount, two professional translators (native speakers) can be funded for this work. We want to globally launch the English and French e-book diffusion in the beginning of 2016.

These include either a dignified end of life, in the comforting company of our loved ones, or a decision to resume life, as occurs in more than half of the cases. More than half of the cases, that is far from negligible! Talking about euthanasia is not dangerous. Not talking about it definitely is. Each of us can play an essential role in this ultimate, life-defining choice.
